Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course: A Rugged Links Experience with a Touch of Magic

Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course in Northumberland

A True Links Welcome – Wind, Rain and Character

There’s something undeniably authentic about playing links golf in the kind of weather that would put most people off venturing outdoors. Our round at Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course began under a grey, drizzly sky, the wind carrying that unmistakable chill you only seem to get on the Northumberland coast. But far from ruining the experience, the cold, wet, and miserable start felt like a rite of passage – part and parcel of what makes links golf so special.

Raw Beauty Meets Immaculate Greens

Set against the stunning backdrop of Dunstanburgh Castle, the course is a rugged and natural layout that embraces its surroundings rather than trying to tame them. From the moment we teed off, it was clear this was a place where golf meets landscape. Rolling fairways, wild grasses, and the sound of waves crashing nearby all combine to create a truly immersive experience.

Despite the wild setting, the putting surfaces were outstanding – smooth, quick, and true. The contrast between the raw terrain and the finesse of the greens was striking, and it elevated the experience well beyond expectations.

The Back Nine: Where the Magic Happens

As we made the turn, the weather began to lift slightly, and the course really came into its own. The back nine is especially enjoyable, with a stretch of holes that edge closer to the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. The combination of golf and scenery is nothing short of breathtaking. It’s one of those rare courses where you often have to remind yourself to focus on your next shot rather than stare out at the horizon.

One of the real highlights was the iconic par 3, where I was lucky enough to make birdie, followed by a round of applause from a group of walkers nearby. It’s moments like this that remind you why we love this game.

Post-Round Perfection in the Clubhouse

After the round, we headed into the clubhouse bar, and any lingering chill was quickly replaced with warmth and cheer. The atmosphere inside was fantastic – friendly, relaxed, and full of the kind of character you hope for after a proper day of golf.

We tucked into sandwiches and chips, washed down with a much-needed pint of local beer. The food hit the spot, and everything was served with genuine smiles, making us feel like long-time regulars rather than first-time visitors.

Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course: A Must-Play on Northumberland’s Golf Coast

In summary, Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Course is a must-play for any golfer who appreciates the tradition, challenge, and soul of links golf. The weather might not always cooperate, but that’s all part of the charm. With stunning views, a fantastic layout, and a welcoming clubhouse, it’s an experience that lingers long after the final putt drops.
